Tree Care

Before you leave our fields, we will give you a Tree Care leaflet, with tips for your consideration to help you look after your tree. In the meantime:

The trees are spread around our fields, where they can benefit from the fresh air and weather.

After you have chosen your tree, we are likely to wrap it in sisal twine, jute twine or a net to help you transport it. We suggest you leave the wrapping on the tree, until the tree is in position for Xmas, because it will be more manageable. However, if the tree is in a bag, please remove the bag when you get home, to allow fresh air to reach the tree. We mainly use bags on potted trees and pot grown trees, to help keep you and your car clean.

To get the best out of your tree, we recommend you also consider the following, according to the type of tree:

Cut Tree

A cut tree has no roots, and is designed to be placed in water, like a flower. If you intend to put a cut tree inside your home, we suggest you:

1) Ensure your tree has been well watered before it is taken inside. The following will help:

a) Put a bucket of water in your garden near to a wall or fence.
b) Cut the base of the trunk to open up the pores, to help the tree drink water (we can do that for you).
c) Place the tree in the bucket of water, and lean the tree against the wall or fence. It is ideal to cut the base, shortly before the tree is put in water, so that the pores do not have time to seal.
d) Leave your tree outside in the water for as many days as possible to absorb the water, whilst in the fresh air.
e) Do NOT keep the tree in a dry place such as a garage, because the tree will start losing moisture too early. It is best, to keep it outside in the fresh air and weather, until you want it inside your home.

2) Use a tree stand (which we can supply) inside your home, which allows you to water the base of the tree.

3) Place the tree in a relatively cool area of your home i.e. not near to a radiator or fire.

Potted Tree

A potted tree, is a tree, which has been taken from a field, and placed in a pot. The loss of long roots during the potting process means that the tree is not expected to grow. (A tree’s roots are usually about twice the height of the tree, hence it is difficult to get the roots in the pot.) A potted tree is just for Xmas.

If you intend to put a potted inside your home, we suggest you:

1) Stand the pot in your garden and water the soil so that it is damp.

2) Leave your tree outside for as many days as possible to absorb the water whilst in the fresh air.

3) Put a tray/cover on the floor in your home, for the tree to stand on, to protect your floor from water and soil.

4) Place the tree in a relatively cool area of your home i.e. not near to a radiator or fire.

5) Regularly water the soil so that it remains damp.

Pot Grown Tree

A pot grown tree, will have been grown in the pot, and is designed to keep growing.

We recommend a pot grown tree be immediately planted outdoors. Please water it well when re-planting, and in the Summer, so that you can enjoy it for many years.  If you do not want the tree to grow too tall, put it in a pot, which will help restrict the growth.

There can be a temptation to temporarily place a pot grown tree in a home for Xmas, but unfortunately that will dry out the tree, and may well lead to it not surviving Xmas. Therefore, if you want to put a pot grown tree indoors, we recommend it only be for a very short period, the cooler the room the better, and please keep it watered.
